Becoming A Good Tutor

With the title that so straight forward, I think most people could have guessed what I am going to share today. Before I start, I have to introduce myself in this blog and it feels so awkward. It feels like you are talking to a mirror.

I am Aisyah, a newbie tutor in our department, Department of Ultrasound. I just started joining this department in January this year but before that, I already worked with Vision College starting from March 2013. So, I already shed my blood, sweat and tears with Vision College for 1 year *congratulate myself

A newbie means that I am lacking skills and still on a journey of becoming a good tutor. So, I am going to share 10 golden rules to become a good tutor.

1. Be honest
2. Be flexible
3. Be patient
4. Be a good listener
5. Be professional
6. Willing to share your own experiences
7. Be a collaborator
8. Teach the student how to learn
9. Be confident
10. Use available resources

Most of people already know this, but the difference is “Are they applying it?”

Challenges that we are facing as tutors nowadays are tough and it reminds me of a video showing how a mother teaches her daughter. It is not related to this topic but it has something that we can learn.

Lastly, people always said that “learning is a continuous process” but for me teaching is also a continuous process.

Ps: Thank you for your help (you know who you are) during the camp and for the participants, I wish you all the best in your future!

It looks fun right? But, for most of the time, I am sitting in front of my laptop (for work) and meeting students and their parents :)

These are all for now. So, see you next time!

Ernst And Vision College

Hi guys, My name is Ernst Gan. A lot of people hardly recognized my English name as "Ernst" but "Ernest". Probably Asians are more familiar with names like Michael, Jason, Howard but not my bizarre name. Nahh... Just saying. Due to that, I always have to introduce "Ernst & Young" Company, one of the big-four audit firm, so that people will know where the "Ernst" came from. Worst comes to worst, I would only end with "Just call me Gan" as an introductory statement.

Starting a career pathway always a challenging task for every fresh graduates. As a toddler in the society, we tend to observe our surrounding, "talk" to the surrounding and eventually, we "surrender" to a firm.

I once was an employee of a well known firm. Entertainment is their strong business nature, until I decided to came down to Kuala Lumpur to seek new challenges and exposures. Until one day, Mr Hoh called me to attend an interview. It was a very sudden decision but I know that I am willing to do this, which is to grow with Vision.

Thanks to my director for a great treatment. How about massageee one day? Hehe. P/S: One of my activities that trigger a lot of haters is the 21st Century phenomena, food photography. Please don't hate me.

Working with marketing team is a lot of fun. I first met Brandon, and he was my senior in the section.

Look at how my Boss presenting a powerful speech to all the ladies & gentlemen up there! Yes, you can!

He professionally greeted me & brought me to my new working area. I started joining a school fair only few days after my employment. To be frank, I am kind of nervous in this particular school fair as I hardly can confidently tell the student on our courses offered. Knowing product knowledge of your company is the key, important thing before presenting ourselves. I learnt my lesson. Day by day, things get better as my director started letting me go to roadshows on my own. An interesting fact about my job is that I am not only telling available courses here at Vision, but I also managed to give a clear picture to students on their future career pathways.

Key to success is failure. That is how we succeed! Seriously.

Working with Vision is way too different compared with my previous employment. Everyone is treated like brothers & sisters. One of the advantages is that everyone is allowed to voice out their opinions without stressing out our differences. However, we still respect The Boss though. yeah...

Allow me to introduce Vision College,
Vision College is a highly potential college that offers Postgraduate Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography (PG DMU) course for 1-year. I bet that you won't find any other place that offers such course, which is also accredited by ASUM in Asia.

Our next intake is on April & July 2014. If you are reading this, perhaps you want to know more, please reach me at 03-7803 8302 ext 107.

Mammogram

I joined Vision College on June 2013. One of the new experiences I gained here is doing Mammogram. Mammogram is an x-ray image of the breast to detect any abnormality of the breast. However, it is exclusively limited to women aged 40 years old and above. It is because younger women have dense breasts.

It is suggested for patients to make appointments for the examination, preferably after the menstrual period. The patient is not allowed to wear deodorant or talcum powder because this will cause artifact to the image. However, the patient is allowed to wear  a 2-piece attire.

Mammogram can be uncomfortable due to compression to the breast. The breast need to be compressed to produce a uniform brightness of the image. This is where the patient feels pain. In addition, it has to be done twice, on each breast! However, the compression lasted only for a few seconds. So the patient just need to be calm and relaxed.

This is how the breast is compressed

Each examination requires four images, two different views for each breast. I usually start with right breast continue with left breast alternately. This is a systematic technique that apply to all basic mammographic examination. This examination usually takes about 15-30 minutes.

Later, all four images will be reported by Radiologist. Any abnormality can be categorized into 5 categories according to BIRADS. However, further examinations such as biopsy are required to determine benign or cancerous lesion.

Appearance of the abnormalities
As time goes by, I am gaining valuable experiences doing mammogram. It is a skill that not only to be learnt from books, but through hands-on experience as well.

Home To Down Syndrome

A great number of children suffer from Down syndrome disorder in this world today. This form of disability is perceived differently in different cultures and these affect the life of Down syndrome children. All of these children can live normal lives as normal ordinary children. Sadly, many of Down syndrome children have been abandoned by their families because they are not ‘ordinary children as us’.
I have spent my time visiting the ‘Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-kanak hyperactive & down syndrome’. I went there together with my social class students.

There, I have learned many things about Down syndrome especially the behaviors of Down syndrome children. One boy, in particular, likes to beat/hurt himself to show his anger. He also does not like it if somebody approaches him. He likes to moan. I had to learn to be calm to approach to him. I have to agree, that Down syndrome children are so kind and they like it if somebody shows love and kindness towards them. They need our love rather than sympathy.
I am amazed when I looked towards them.

There, I was given the opportunity to learn how to listen, communicate and relate to people in an entirely new way. I found meaning of life and happiness from them. I learn to appreciate myself too.

Show support and love to people who really need it like the children with Down syndrome’.

Benefits Of Hands On Volunteering

I worked as a volunteer in Malawi, Africa from October 2004 – till January 2010 as School Administrator and English Teacher. The most important thing I realized to be a volunteer was I had to “get out of my comfort zone”.

I had to go through inculturation classes, learn to be patient and learn to communicate at getting positive reactions from the voluntary work and projects . All these taught was taught to me when I was in Rome for three months while I lived with the Cannosian Organization in Rome, and worked 2 days a week at the Soup Kitchen before I left for Malawi.

Volunteers gain skills such as community skills and the ability to work with others, take directions and lead others and the last but not least are time management skills and dedication to the work at hand.

Volunteering normally illustrates our interest and our character to a certain extent. It has always been an eye opener to me to realize how small gestures of volunteering benefits a the receiver and the giver, and provides an emotionally uplifting experience and positive impact to the giver.

Voluntary work helps build up communities, allows individuals to become encouraged in social services and the communities benefit from this exercise, and such happiness cannot be matched with wealth or money. It is just so amazing to see, how it enriches our lives after such an experience, as it transforms us to see the world in a more realistic manner and allows us to look at the world and its people with more kindness and we will always try to make the world a “better place” to live.

Congratulations!!!

We are proud to announce that ALL of our graduates have passed the Lembaga Jururawat Malaysia (LJM) examinations. This means that we have achieved 100% passing rate for the examination which was conducted on the 4th of December 2013 Congratulation to our nurses! After 3 years of hard work, our nursing graduates have finally become registered nurses who can contribute to the society with their passion and commitment.

According to Madam Tang Yoke Yap, our Head Of Department for Nursing, this industry still has tremendous potential for all the aspiring nurses out there. Although there were clouds of negativity shrouding this profession recently, most notably the glut of jobless nurses in this country, Madam Tang strongly believes that it all boils down to the quality of these new nursing graduates. Good quality and caring nurses will always be able to secure jobs, be it at public and private hospitals, healthcare centres or clinics. In addition, she suggested that there is a great demand for competent nurses in several foreign countries such as Singapore and Saudi Arabia.

As Madam Tang enters her 4th year in heading the Diploma in Nursing programme at Vision College, she is still convinced that, the key difference between good and great graduates is the proper guidance of the teaching staff and clinical instructors. At Vision College, she and her capable assisting partner, Ms. Chang Yee Chieng have a wealth of experience and knowledge in the nursing industry. Prior to teaching, they were both successful practicing nurses at very reputable both local and foreign hospitals. However, given their shared passion and belief for a greater purpose, this dynamic duo decided to share their specialties and wisdom and become educators.

Madam Tang will continue to strive for a 100% passing rate in the LJM examinations for Vision College students. With Madam Tang's leadership and her talented teaching staffs, Vision College is surely a step closer in becoming the premier college for Nursing.
